In a tale of desperation and heartbreak, Wellington Phiri from Chegutu resorted to extraordinary measures to catch his wife, Prisca Mhuru, in an alleged affair. What began as a covert operation ended in a dramatic and chaotic confrontation.
Wellington, feeling cornered by suspicions and whispers about his wife’s fidelity, devised a plan that seemed straight out of a movie. With meticulous attention to detail, he transformed himself into a woman. He donned Prisca’s dress, bra, and headscarf, aiming to slip unnoticed into the house where he believed his wife was rendezvousing with her lover. This was not a simple cross-dressing attempt; it was an act of sheer desperation driven by a man on the edge.
His suspicions led him to the doorstep of Mabhayo, a neighbor whom Wellington accused of having an affair with Prisca. Mabhayo was known for his bachelor lifestyle and rumored weakness for women, making him a prime suspect in Wellington’s eyes. With his heart pounding and his disguise in place, Wellington approached Mabhayo’s house under the cover of night.

As Wellington knocked on the door, he braced himself for the confrontation. Mabhayo opened the door, and for a brief moment, Wellington’s disguise held. However, Mabhayo quickly saw through the facade. Realizing that his neighbor was disguised as a woman, Mabhayo’s demeanor shifted from surprise to aggression. He locked the door, effectively trapping Prisca inside, and threatened Wellington with an axe, forcing him to flee in terror.
“My neighbour has wrecked my marriage. I learned that Mabhayo was accommodating my wife in his bedroom since he is single. I dressed like a woman and visited Mabhayo’s house because he has a weakness for women. His dog tried to scare me, but I kept on knocking, and he attended to me,” Wellington recounted.
Wellington’s dramatic escape left him more determined yet fearful. He has two children with Prisca and was desperate to salvage his marriage. His accusations against Mabhayo were fueled by a mix of jealousy and pain. “After noticing that it was me, he locked the door while my wife was inside, took an axe, and threatened to kill me. I ran away. Ndine vana vaviri nemudzimai wangu asi Mabhayo afunga kudya zvevapfupi nekureba,” he told H-Metro, expressing his frustration in Shona.
Efforts to reach Mabhayo and Prisca for their side of the story were unsuccessful. However, sources close to the situation revealed that Wellington’s marriage had been fraught with tension. He had engaged in multiple confrontations with men he suspected of being involved with his wife. These ongoing clashes had created a hostile environment, leading to a breakdown in trust and communication.
