The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a record-breaking prize money for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in the West Indies and USA from June 28 to July 15.
The tournament will feature 20 teams, with the winners walking away with a minimum of $2.45 million and the coveted trophy.
The runners-up will receive a minimum of $1.28 million, while the losing semi-finalists will earn $787,500 each. The four teams that fail to make it out of the Super 8s will receive $382,500 each, and the teams that finish 9th to 12th will receive $247,500 each.
Each team will also receive an additional $31,154 for every match they win, excluding the semi-finals and final. The total prize money for the tournament is a staggering $11.25 million.
Zimbabwe, however, will be absent from the tournament after failing to qualify in the recent qualifiers held in Namibia. The team had been favourites to progress alongside Namibia but suffered embarrassing defeats to the hosts and Uganda.
The ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice, expressed his excitement about the tournament, saying that it is “historic in so many ways” and that the prize money reflects the significance of the event. The tournament will be played over 28 days, with 55 matches scheduled across nine venues.
The format of the tournament will see 40 first-round matches played before the top eight teams progress to the Super 8s. The semi-finals will be held in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, with the final taking place in Barbados on June 29.
