Chief Marupi of Gwanda District, whose real name was Oaheng Nare, tragically passed away on Sunday at the young age of 28, following a brief illness that necessitated his hospitalization at Healthpoint Hospital in Harare.
In light of his untimely demise, the community has rallied together to honor his memory, with his burial now scheduled for Wednesday at his rural home in Mbuzimbili Village, Selonga area, emphasizing the importance of family and communal support during this difficult time.
Originally intended to take place today, the funeral arrangements were adjusted to accommodate the necessary transportation of Chief Marupi’s body from Harare to Gwanda on Tuesday, illustrating the logistical challenges often faced in such circumstances.
Chief Marupi, who took on the responsibilities of leadership at the age of 18 after being installed as a minor chief in 2012, had stepped into his full chieftaincy role two years later, following the passing of his father, Lawrence Nare, in 2008.
The significance of his lineage is rooted in the history of the Daueatswala of the Babirwa tribe, composed of Kalanga and Venda people who migrated from Botswana, grounding his leadership in a rich heritage.
His wife, Rorisang Tlou, is left to mourn the loss of her husband, who, despite facing financial hardships after his father’s death, managed to carry the weight of his chieftaincy with grace.
A family representative, Ms. Monalisa Marupi, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, recognizing the essential role that solidarity plays in times of grief.
As the community prepares to say their final goodbyes, the legacy of Chief Marupi will live on through the cultural practices and traditions he represented.
