China Pledges Support to Zambia’s Hydropower Woes In a bid to alleviate Zambia’s crippling drought-induced hydropower generation deficit, the Chinese government has vowed to implement measures to address the issue.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing, emphasized that the forthcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, scheduled for September 4-6, 2024, will mark a significant turning point in Zambia’s development trajectory.
Ambassador Han announced that China will host the Zambia Power Development Forum in Beijing, concurrently with the FOCAC summit, to explore solutions to Zambia’s persistent power shortage.
This high-level gathering will convene stakeholders from China’s power and financial sectors to collaborate on finding answers to Zambia’s energy challenges.
Highlighting China’s commitment to Africa’s development, Ambassador Han noted that over the past 25 years, China has invested heavily in the construction and upgrade of 66,000 kilometers of power transmission and distribution lines, as well as power generation facilities.
This significant investment underscores China’s dedication to supporting Africa’s growth. Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, is expected to attend both the FOCAC Summit and the Zambia Power Development Forum, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations.
This collaborative effort aims to revolutionize Zambia’s power landscape, ensuring a brighter future for the nation.
