Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has blasted medical aid societies and health service providers in Zimbabwe for their poor service delivery and overcharging of subscribers.
Speaking at the Association of Health Funders of Zimbabwe (AHFoZ) annual stakeholders’ conference, Vice President Chiwenga, who was represented by Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Professor Amon Murwira, expressed his concern over the lack of efficient service delivery by medical aid societies, urging them to provide the services they are being paid for.
He emphasized the need for citizens to have confidence in the healthcare system and called for immediate attention to address the issue of shortfalls in patient transactions.
Furthermore, Vice President Chiwenga urged employers to pay medical aid contributions on time, highlighting their role in supporting the healthcare system.
As the Minister of Health and Child Care, he also announced that the government would require the leadership of medical aid societies to undergo continuous professional development programs annually as part of the regulatory framework.
Vice President Chiwenga highlighted the achievements made in the health sector, such as the availability of essential stock in public health facilities and the revival of local pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The government has also invested in advanced biomedical equipment for hospitals and has taken measures to reduce health worker attrition while scaling up training programs.
