Five Form 2 students from Chrome High School in Shurugwi have been granted bail until Monday after they were accused of stealing 16 laptops that had been donated to Selukwe Primary School by the President’s wife, Auxillia Mnangagwa. Additionally, the students allegedly broke into a school tuck shop and took various items. The total value of the stolen goods and laptops is estimated at US$8,000, and approximately US$5,000 worth of property has been recovered.
These individuals appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Sithabile Zungula on Thursday. Due to their ages, their identities are being protected, and they cannot be named.
The prosecution, represented by Tafadzwa Guzete, detailed the case. According to the state’s case, on August 16, 2023, the accused students collaborated and devised a plan to steal from Selukwe Primary School, which is under the leadership of headmistress Vhenekai Madzokere (56).
Using unknown objects, they gained entry to the school’s tuck shop and stole various groceries, including 17 packets of Joe biscuits, 1 pack of Popticorn snacks, 3 packs of Hello snacks, 1 crate of soft drinks, 96 toffee bars, 12 maheu bottles, sweets, and juice. Additionally, they took 2 basketballs, volleyballs, tennis balls, hockey balls, soccer balls, a hockey stick, and netballs.
Later, at around 3 pm, they entered the school laboratory through the ceiling and allegedly stole 16 laptops.
The matter came to light on September 19, 2023, when one of the accused’s guardians discovered laptop components in his son’s possession. After questioning him, the son admitted to the theft, leading to the involvement of the police, who subsequently arrested all the suspects.
