Several ‘A’ Level students at Magwegwe High School in Bulawayo were injured last Friday when a classroom ceiling unexpectedly collapsed during a lesson.
The !njured students were promptly taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.
Mr. Taungana Ndoro, the Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, confirmed the incident.
While the school authorities acted quickly to secure medical care for the affected students, many parents have voiced concerns over the lack of financial assistance for medication costs following their children’s discharge.
One parent, whose child was among the 12 students inj_red, expressed frustration at the situation. “My son was one of the five students who sustained more serious injuries, and I had to purchase pain medication for him after he was discharged.
The students suffered bruises when the ceiling collapsed, and others had to help pull them out of the rubble from the next classroom,” the parent explained.
Despite a meeting on Tuesday between the headmaster and the School Development Committee (SDC), the concerned parent noted that there was no discussion regarding assistance for medication expenses.
Magwegwe High School headmaster Mr. William Ncube declined to comment on the matter and redirected all inquiries to Provincial Education Director (PED) Mr. Bernard Mazambane, who was unavailable due to ongoing meetings.
The ceiling collapse has raised significant concerns about the safety of school infrastructure.
Parents are now calling for urgent repairs and preventive measures to ensure such accidents do not occur in the future.
