The construction of eight stainless steel grain silos in Kwekwe, Midlands Province is now 80% complete. The Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Midlands Province, Honorable Minister Owen Ncube, alongside Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Hon. Dr. Jenfan Muswere, toured the newly developed Grain Marketing Board (GMB) silos in Kwekwe.
The facilities, part of a broader initiative to enhance agricultural productivity in the Midlands Province which will hold up to 56,000 metric tons of grain, supporting local farmers and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s vision towards an upper middle-income society by 2030.
Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services has confirmed the development on his X ( Formerly known as twitter) handle.
“Govt is funding the construction of silos in 8 provinces of the country. Several silos are being constructed per province. This is a wholly Govt program which is creating a lot jobs: what you are looking at are the silos being constructed in Kwekwe. 8 silos are being constructed there and they are at 80% completion now,” he posted.
The Grain marketing Board (GMB) aims to expand its grain storage capacity through the construction of additional silos across the country in line with government’s trust to increase the national strategic reserves.
The construction of the silos is creating employment, boosting businesses in the construction sector and supporting the industry supplying materials
The government is targeting a cereal production of over 3,2 million tonnes to ensure food and nutrition security as well as ensuring farmers grow enough for their own family sustenance with some left for sale.
