A 31- year- old man who was employed as court accounting assistant at Hwange Magistrate court has been jailed for theft of trust property. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the development and identified the suspect as Tafadzwa Chakavanda.
It is alleged that the suspect was given money to deposit in the bank, but converted some of it to personal use.
According to court papers, “on the 7th of June 2024 the accused person who was employed by the Judicial Service Commission as an Accounting Assistance, stationed at the Hwange Magistrate’s Court was charged with the duty of depositing USD339 and ZIG 225 into the bank. The accused person did not deposit the USD339, instead he converted it to personal use and only deposited the ZiG 225. The offence came to light on July 2 as the Provincial Accountant was reconciling bank receipts. A police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person.”
Chakavanda was convicted and sentenced to 24 months imprisonment of which 10 months were suspended.
A further 2 months was suspended on condition of restitution. He will serve 12 months effectively.
