The Consumer Protection Commission has taken action against businesses selling expired products in Chitungwiza and Harare.
In a statement seen by Newsreportzim.com, the Commission reported that these businesses were taken to court, where some were convicted and fined up to USD 3,000. The expired products were destroyed, according to the Ministry of Information, Publicity & Broadcasting‘s X handle.
The convicted businesses included small, medium, and large retailers. The Commission emphasized that it will not rest until all perpetrators selling expired products and exposing unsuspecting consumers are brought to justice.
Consumer rights are a global concern, but according to a baseline knowledge survey conducted by the Consumer Protection Commission, awareness is almost nonexistent in Zimbabwe.
The Commission aims to protect consumers from the serious health risks posed by consuming expired products, such as food poisoning.
