A UK-based father’s dream of retiring in Zimbabwe turned into a nightmare when his own daughter and son-in-law allegedly swindled him out of over $100,000. Felix Kobeti Magomo, a retired educator, had trusted Unity Marengu (37) and her husband Nelson Farai Marengu (42) with his life savings to purchase and develop a residential stand.
The couple allegedly used the money for their own gain, registering the property in their own names. When Felix discovered the betrayal, they dodged him, and a compromise was reached to register the property under a trust. However, they later reneged on the agreement, sending a shocking email through their lawyer.
Felix reported the matter to the police, and the couple was arrested. They now face sentencing in the High Court after being referred from the Kwekwe Magistrate’s Court. The Zimbabwean diaspora is concerned, as many rely on relatives to manage investments.
Felix’s trust was shattered when he discovered the property was registered in Unity and Nelson’s names. “They put the property in their own names,” he said. “I didn’t know. I found out when I returned to Zimbabwe.”
The couple’s actions have left Felix heartbroken and the community shocked.
