The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the dangers of pirating and offering rides to strangers in private vehicles following a recent incident of robbery that has raised significant concerns about passenger safety.
On August 30 2024, a motorist traveling along the Harare-Bulawayo road experienced a traumatic robbery at the Rera Shops area after unwittingly giving a lift to two individuals from Chegutu to Harare.
The victim, who was driving a Nissan Sunny, lost a staggering US$2000 in cash to the suspects, who took advantage of his willingness to help. This alarming incident potrays the risks associated with informal transportation, as passengers may not always be who they claim to be.
The ZRP is urging motorists to be cautious and to refrain from offering lifts to unknown individuals, as such actions can lead to dangerous and potentially life-thre@tening situations.
Additionally, the police are reinforcing the message that those engaging in pirate taxi services are not only breaking the law but also endangering their own safety and that of their passengers.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the nearest police station to help combat this rising trend of crime.
