Two individuals posing as immigration officers have been brought to court for allegedly defrauding a woman of US$500 through an act of deceit.
Romeo Mlambo and Mbonisi Nyathi appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa, where they pleaded guilty to the charges of fraud. They have been convicted and remanded out of custody until September 18 for sentencing.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred in January of this year when Mlambo and Nyathi encountered Angela Chimombe, who expressed her need for assistance in swiftly sorting out her immigration papers. Exploiting the situation, the accused individuals falsely presented themselves as immigration officers, assuring Chimombe of their ability to help her.
Taking advantage of the situation, Mlambo and Nyathi then demanded a payment of US$500 from Chimombe for their purported services. However, immediately after receiving the payment, the pair vanished, leaving the victim alone and realizing she had fallen victim to a scam. As a result, Chimombe promptly reported the incident to the police.
