Rassson Hove, 38, and Moses Mudzingwa, 31, from Mangunye village found themselves in legal trouble as they were brought before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court for stock theft after a family dispute turned violent during a funeral gathering.
On the fateful evening of November 10, 2024, tensions escalated when the two brothers confronted their sibling, the complainant, accusing him of bewitching their recently deceased brother.
This grave accusation sparked a heated argument, leading the complainant to flee from his own homestead in fear.
Taking advantage of the situation, Hove and Mudzingwa entered the complainant’s kraal with malicious intent and unlawfully slaughtered one of his prized oxen, valued at USD 500.
The heinous act didn’t end there, as they proceeded to serve a portion of the stolen meat at the very funeral where the dispute had erupted, turning a moment of mourning into a scene of further conflict and theft.
The remaining meat from the slaughtered ox was left carelessly in the complainant’s b3droom, demonstrating a complete disregard for familial ties and respect.
Police reports indicate that the value of the stolen livestock was significant, and shockingly, there was no recovery of the stolen goods.
After facing charges of stock theft, the two brothers were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
However, their sentence included a twist, as one year was suspended on the condition that they compensate the complainant with USD 500 in restitution.
Each brother was ordered to pay USD 250, highlighting the court’s attempt to rectify the wrongs committed against their own kin.
