President Mnangagwa has this afternoon approved the licensing of Starlink by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) with the aim of enhancing and providing advanced internet and digital services in Zimbabwe.
In a statement, President Mnangagwa emphasised that the decision to approve this license was made to underscore the Vision 2030 clause, which advocates for science, innovation, and technology.
“One of the strategic pillars of the 2nd Republic’s developmental agenda under Vision 2030 is innovation, science, and technology. Given the prioritization of the digital economy and the increasing significance of technology in our daily activities, it is imperative for the Government to take a leading role in fostering an environment conducive to technology investment,” stated President Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa highlighted that he granted the license to Starlink to offer advanced internet and related digital processing services in Zimbabwe through its exclusive local partner.
“I am pleased to announce that I have approved the licensing of Starlink by POTRAZ to provide advanced internet and related digital processing services in Zimbabwe through its sole and exclusive local partner, IMC Communications (Pvt) Ltd. Starlink, operating as a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite operator, is wholly owned by the global conglomerate Space X, led by the prominent multi-billionaire Elon Musk,” President Mnangagwa announced.
According to sources, Starlink will deliver its services in Zimbabwe through its exclusive local partner IMC Communications, owned by Wicknell Chivayo.
A few months ago, POTRAZ issued warnings of potential arrests for individuals and businesses involved in distributing and advertising Starlink Internet services’ equipment.
