The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has launched a series of awareness campaigns in Bulawayo’s high-risk veld fire areas to educate residents on the dangers of veld fires and the importance of preventing them.
The campaign aims to reduce the number of fire outbreaks as the summer season approaches, a period typically characterised by dry and hot conditions that increase the risk of fires.
The EMA is collaborating with local authorities such as traditional leaders, and community groups to conduct fire safety inspections and enforcement activities in high-risk areas.
The agency is also providing training to firefighters and emergency responders on how to respond to veld fires. EMA has identified areas such as the Matobo Hills, the Umguza River, and the Nketa suburb as high-risk veld fire zones and is focusing its efforts on these areas
The campaign seeks to educate residents on the causes of veld fires, including human activities such as the careless disposal of cigarettes, matches, and other flammable materials.
The EMA is also emphasizing the importance of fire safety and prevention measures, such as creating firebreaks, using fire extinguishers, and reporting any suspicious fires to the authorities.
The agency is working with local schools and community groups to educate children and adults on the dangers of veld fires and the importance of fire safety.
By reducing the risk of veld fires, the EMA hopes to protect lives, property, and the environment. Veld fires can have devastating consequences, including damage to infrastructure, loss of livestock, and harm to human health.
