Shepherd Emmanuel Nyamayaro, a customs clearing agent at Beitbridge Border Post, has appeared in court on charges of helping in the importation of a vehicle with a bogus rebate letter.
According to media report, Nyamayaro is accused of assisting Noel Kororo in obtaining a fraudulent Zimra rebate letter, which spared him from paying $5,280 in duty on a BMW 5 Series imported from Japan.
Nyamayaro has been released on bail and is expected to appear in court on November 9, while Kororo is already on remand.
According to prosecutor Ms. Mercy Masamvi, Kororo bought the BMW in September 2022 and asked for a rebate.
However, before the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development could approve the request, Kororo recruited Nyamayaro’s assistance in creating a phony refund letter.
Nyamayaro allegedly handed the falsified letter, dated November 3, 2022, at the Nyamapanda Border Post, which exempted Kororo from paying duty.
Based on this incorrect information, Zimra official Allen Dudzayi Zengwa processed and cleared the vehicle.
The rebate application was eventually granted on November 7, 2022, but the bogus rebate letter had already been utilized, costing Zimra $5,284 in unpaid duty.
