A tragic incident has shaken the community of Village 8B Square in Igusi, Nyamandlovu, after a 35-year-old man allegedly stoned his 89-year-old grandmother to death during a heated argument. Bhekimpilo Ncube, the suspect, has been arrested and charged with murder.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at around 6:30 PM, when Ncube demanded that his grandmother, Idah Ncube, show him the grave of his late father. According to Inspector Glory Banda, the provincial police spokesperson, the grandmother explained that Ncube’s parents had died of natural causes, but he was not satisfied with her explanation and accused her of being responsible for their deaths.
The situation escalated when Ncube picked up a brick from beside the verandah and force-marched his grandmother out of the homestead, demanding further answers. He then became violent, striking her several times on the back of the head, causing multiple skull fractures. The elderly woman collapsed and died on the spot.
The police responded to the scene, arrested Ncube, and recovered the brick used in the assault as evidence. The body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem examination. Village Head Zwelani Mpofu confirmed the incident, stating that it took place in his jurisdiction.
The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and respecting the elderly. The case will proceed to court, and Ncube faces charges of murder.
