A 60-year-old man, Benson Kaumba Snr, has testified in court against his son, Benson Kaumba Jnr, 27, who is facing charges of occasioning actual bodily h@rm. The vi0lent incident, which unfolded in March, involved the younger Kaumba allegedly att@cking his father with a brazier in a fit of anger.
A Confrontation in the Early Hours
During his testimony before Ndola magistrate Charles Chanda, Benson Kaumba Snr recounted the unsettling events of that morning. It was around 4:00 a.m. when he noticed his son returning home at an odd hour. At the time, Kaumba Snr was cleaning his shoes, preparing to start his day. Concerned for his son’s safety and habits, he decided to confront him about his late-night escapades.
“When he entered the house, I asked him why he was coming home at such an awkward hour,” Kaumba Snr explained. His intention, he added, was merely to advise his son to change his ways, emphasising the potential dangers of staying out so late.
From Advice to Vi0lence
What began as a father’s attempt to counsel his son quickly spiraled out of control. Instead of responding with respect or an explanation, the younger Kaumba retorted with a question of his own, challenging his father’s presence at that time of the morning.
“I was simply advising him to stop coming home at awkward times as it was dangerous,” Kaumba Snr said. However, his son’s reaction was far from what he had expected. Overcome with anger, Benson Kaumba Jnr grabbed a brazier—a household object typically used for heating—and began striking his father on the head.
The elder Kaumba described the assault in vivid detail, recounting the pain and shock he felt as his son, in a moment of uncontrollable rage, used the brazier as a weapon.
An Unusual Musical Twist
As if the physical vi0lence wasn’t enough, the younger Kaumba added a bizarre element to the altercation. According to his father, he began singing the popular local song Nalitumpa Ine by 4 na 5, featuring rapper Slap Dee, during the att@ck. The song’s lyrics, which translate to “I have been foolish,” seemed oddly fitting but delivered in an unsettling manner given the circumstances.
Seeking Help and Further Humiliation
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the elder Kaumba contacted the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) for assistance. Officers quickly arrived at the scene to apprehend the younger Kaumba. However, even as he was being taken into custody, his behavior remained defiant.
The elder Kaumba testified that his son, in an act of blatant disrespect, spat saliva on his face as the officers restrained him. This final act of humiliation further compounded the emotional toll on the father, who had already endured a vi0lent ass@ult at the hands of his son.
