The Gauteng Hawks, officially known as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have obtained a court order to forfeit R40,000 from an undocumented immigrant, Gift Mafukidze, originally from Zimbabwe.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, the spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng, disclosed that Mafukidze was arr3sted under Section 34 of South Africa’s Immigration Act.
He had been detained at the Lindela holding facility since July 2023 after being transferred from Vredendal in the Western Cape.
During his time in detention, authorities discovered the substantial amount of cash in his possession.
The Pretoria High Court granted the forfeiture order on December 10, 2024. Ramovha remarked, “This decisive action underscores the DPCI’s unwavering commitment to combatting illegal activities and enforcing the law in South Africa.”

Further investigations revealed that Mafukidze was involved in illegal mining operations, which he claimed was the source of the funds. He has since been deported back to Zimbabwe.
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, head of the Gauteng Hawks, praised the high court’s ruling, reaffirming their dedication to maintaining the rule of law and safeguarding South Africa’s economic integrity from criminal enterprises.
“This success further highlights the critical role of asset forfeiture in dismantling such operations and preventing illicit funds from being reinvested into the economy,” he stated.
