First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa has officially opened the Second Bulawayo Breast Cancer Symposium, urging people to undergo regular checks for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and prostate cancer to prevent avoidable d3aths.
The symposium, which was held over three days, brought together medical professionals, representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), and experts from the Association for Breast Surgery for Britain and Ireland (ABS).
The event, themed “Strengthening the pillars of breast cancer management,” aimed to strengthen the country’s breast cancer management system and improve healthcare services.
It also showcased the government’s efforts to develop advancements in medical access, research, and healthcare technology.
During the symposium, it was revealed that the government is making progress in expanding medical infrastructure, personnel development, and healthcare services across various sectors.
One notable partnership highlighted during the symposium is between United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) and ABS. This collaboration has enabled local nurses and doctors to receive training and knowledge transfer from international experts in breast surgery, improving their skills and expertise in the field.
The First Lady’s call to action for regular cancer checks is timely, given that breast cancer is a leading cause of death among women in Zimbabwe.
According to statistics, one in 28 women in Zimbabwe are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Early detection and treatment are critical in saving lives and reducing mortality rates.
The Second Bulawayo Breast Cancer Symposium provided a platform for experts to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in breast cancer management.
It also highlighted the need for continued awareness campaigns and education on breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.
