In a case that brings out the complexities of polygamous relationships, a Harare magistrate found himself mediating a conflict between two wives, Fortunate Manhiri and Mutsawashe Chipwanya, who share the same husband.
Manhiri, the first wife, filed a complaint in court, claiming that Chipwanya’s !ntimate activities with their husband were disturbing her peace and affecting their teenage children.
She expressed her distress over the situation, noting that Chipwanya often visits their home while intoxicated, engaging in int!mate encounters with their husband on her bed, which her children can hear.
To compound the already strained relationship, Manhiri alleged that Chipwanya had threatened her life by saying she would poison her.
In contrast, Chipwanya countered these accusations by asserting that Manhiri was unable to accept the reality of their shared marriage and the arrangements that come with it.
She pointed out that her husband had paid lobola to her family in 2021, signifying their formal union, and claimed that Manhiri often disrupts their moments together by pouring water on them while they are undressed.
The court hearing, which took place last week, revealed the underlying tension and conflict inherent in polygamous arrangements, particularly concerning shared int!macy and schedule agreements.
Ultimately, the magistrate sought to de-escalate the situation by instructing the two women to maintain peace within the household.
However, the magistrate did not provide any concrete resolution regarding the contentious issue of a schedule for int!mate time with their husband.
