Four pupils from Makota Primary School in Bikita sustained serious injuries after jumping from a truck that had initially offered them a ride but later changed its route on November 11.
Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, the Acting Provincial Police Spokesperson for Masvingo, confirmed the incident and cautioned students against utilizing free rides from strangers.
“I can confirm the occurrence of this incident on a dirt road between villages 30 and 31 in Mashoko, Bikita. I urge learners to avoid accepting free transportation from unknown individuals. Additionally, I encourage drivers to stop and assist if they witness an incident,” said Patinyu.
The events unfolded on November 11 at around 5:30 PM when the four students were heading home. A truck driver traveling towards Mashoko offered them a ride, and they were instructed to sit in the loading area.

However, as the truck changed its route, the students attempted to signal the driver to stop, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Fearing for their safety, they jumped from the moving vehicle, resulting in injuries.
Upon arrival, the police found the truck had already left the scene and transported the injured students to Mashoko Mission Hospital for treatment.
Two of the pupils, who suffered minor injuries, were treated and subsequently discharged, while the other two required hospitalization. One sustained injuries to the knees and elbows, while the other had a swollen head along with additional injuries to the knees and elbows.
