Former Zimbabwean lawmaker, Hon. Job Sikhala, who recently returned to the country, has demanded the immediate release of a one-year-old child jailed alongside her mother.
The former Zengeza West Member of Parliament spent almost four months abroad for medical treatment.
The child’s mother was arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on June 16, 2024, at Jameson Timber’s private residence in Avondale, Harare.
In a social media post seen by newsreportzim.com, the outspoken politician, Job Sikhala, stated that he is joining all Zimbabweans and Africans in demanding the immediate release of the one-year-old child who is with her mother.
“I am joining all Zimbabweans, Africans, and the civilised world to demand the immediate release of this one year old child on the back of her innocent mother from Chikurubi Female Maximum prison,” Sikhala wrote.
The infant’s mother and other opposition activists were denied bail by the Harare magistrate and also their appeal to the High court was dismissed by the High court judge Justice Mutevedzi.
The accaused have spent over 5 weeks in pre-trial detention.
