THE City of Kadoma has embarked on upgrading sewer pipes in some parts of Rimuka
For the past two decades, residents of Rimuka have been complaining about the old sewer system in the suburb.
A City of Kadoma delegation, led by the Water and Sewerage Engineering Department Head, Benford Makosa toured the site to appraise the community on the work in progress.
The city’s delegation first toured the Single Quarters (SQ) area, where the Council has laid new pipes, and addressed scores of residents.
“The main reason for our tour is to appraise you on the works that the Council is currently working on,” said Makosa.
“The Council had realised this perennial sewer problem needed new pipes after the old system had collapsed.
“The council then engaged a private contractor and, in partnership with this private contractor, we are going to lay new sewer pipes in all the areas.
“We have started with your area but will be moving to General Blocks (GBs) and later to Chanatsira Street until the whole of Rimuka is laid with new sewer pipes.”
Makosa also revealed that the borehole to supply water to the area will be resuscitated after a donation of a new water pump was extended to the Council.
Residents welcomed the new sewer pipes but called on the Council to decongest the area by availing cheap residential stands.
“The Council can do everything in trying to prevent the recurring of this perennial sewer problem in the SQ/GB area but eventually it will collapse again,” said a resident Bobby Banda.
“The Council must just do the noble thing of decongesting this area by availing cheap residential stands to us,
“Victory Parks had been availed to us by the government but what happened later is a discussion for another day.
“Just provide residential stands and the problem of sewer problems will be a thing of the past in this area.” A resident representative, Temba Marko, said that this project was a result of numerous engagements with the Council but called for decongestion of the area.
The dilapidated SQ/GB houses were built during the colonial era.
City of Kadoma Public Relations Officer Nyasha Ndamba said:
“This sewer upgrade project is a City of Kadoma funded project meant to modernise some Council infrastructure and the Council has lined up some projects for upgrading as we move towards a smart city status.”
