In a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against gender-based vi0lence, two young men from Bulawayo, Nkosinathi Sibanda (21) and Patrick Mpofu (20), have been charged with gang-r@ping a woman who was walking home from a funeral in Iminyela suburb.
Their appearance before Bulawayo regional magistrate, Mrs. Sibongile Marondedze, on Wednesday, highlighted the harrowing nature of the crime, which allegedly took place in September when the victim was ambushed by the pair and two unidentified accomplices.
Ms. Melissa Dube, the prosecutor, recounted the traumatic incident where the victim was violently tripped and subsequently assa_lted, despite her desperate attempts to scream for help.
The brutal att_ck reportedly involved the accused taking turns to perpetrate the crime, leaving the victim to find her way back to the funeral venue to seek assistance.
Following her report to the police, she received medical attention at Mpilo Central Hospital, where the authorities were alerted to the severity of the situation.
An investigation was promptly initiated, leading to the arrest of Sibanda and Mpofu, while the search intensifies for their two accomplices who are still evading capture.
Police are urging members of the public to provide any information that could aid in apprehending the suspects, as a manhunt unfolds.
The case is set to continue on October 17th, with the prosecution determined to present compelling evidence that underscores the urgent need for justice in this deeply concerning matter.
