The late musician Garry Mapanzure’s wife, Mai TJ, moved mourners to tears yesterday after she sang for her husband at his funeral.
Garry Mapanzure died on 13 October 2023 at the age of 25. He was involved in a fatal car accident on the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway in Masvingo. He was a passenger in his sister’s car, which collided with another vehicle.
One of the vehicles was entering the Clipsham Views residential area when it smashed another vehicle coming from Beitbridge. Garry was a passenger in his sister’s Toyota Vitz, hit by the other car. His sister, who was driving, sustained a broken leg and was taken to Masvingo General Hospital.
Garry’s nephew, also in the car, died on the spot. Another victim was Langton Madima, a student at Great Zimbabwe University and a friend of Garry.
Garry was critically injured and was initially taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital. He then had to be ferried to Harare for specialized medical care, but he died before leaving. He passed away around 3 a.m. on Friday, 13 October, 2023.
The Wapunza hitmaker was buried today at Loan Cemetery in Masvingo at 2 p.m. High-profile figures, including Masvingo mayor Shantel Yeukai Chiwara, rapper Hillzy and Samanyanga Sounds musician Mr Candy, graced the farewell.
Garry Mapanzure’s friends and family, including his in-laws, could not contain their emotions and sobbed during their speeches.
After his sermon, the pastor who gave the word invited Garry’s wife, Mai TJ, to sing for her departed husband. She revealed that she had been fasting from the day she heard about the accident and is coming to terms with his death. Mai TJ added that as she was mourning, she heard a voice telling her to praise God.
Flanked by her mother and aunt, Garry’s wife sang Makanaka Jesu, bringing the mourners to tears. Mai TJ’s singing was heartrending as she wailed bitterly for her husband.
