This ceremonial procession is not only a rite of passage but also a celebration of their transition into adulthood.
As part of the tradition, these young women present freshly cut reeds to the Queen Mother. These reeds are used to create windbreaks for her residence, symbolizing protection and respect.
While historically the king had the privilege of selecting a wife from among the maidens, today’s festival focuses more on preserving and showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of Eswatini.
