In a shocking turn of events, an elderly woman from Jukulyn, Pretoria, was allegedly arrested at a local Shoprite store for attempting to purchase groceries with counterfeit currency.
The incident has revealed a deeper connection to a recent lobola payment made by her Nigerian son-in-law, which involved a significant sum of fake money.
According to SurgeZirc reports, the woman’s Nigerian son-in-law, identified as Kelechi Johnson Adegoke, had recently paid R95,000 as lobola for his bride-to-be. However, it has now come to light that the entire payment was made with counterfeit bills.
As investigations unfolded, the police reportedly arrested four members of the family who were found in possession of the fake money. It is believed that the counterfeit currency had been circulated among family members before the mother attempted to use it at the Shoprite store.
Witnesses claim that the elderly woman, unaware of the fraudulent nature of the money, was taken by surprise when informed by store personnel that the bills were counterfeit. Authorities were swiftly called to the scene, and she was subsequently arrested.
During the investigation, law enforcement officers were able to recover approximately R40,000 of the fake money from the family members involved. Unfortunately, the remaining amount is alleged to have been spent already.
