The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has announced the starting date for Form 5 students’ classes.
In a statement released on Monday, the ministry also provided guidance on the fees that Form 5 students should pay.
This announcement follows the release of the November 2023 Ordinary Level results by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) last week on Monday. According to the Zimsec board chairperson, Professor Eddie Mwenje, the overall pass rate for 2023 increased by 4.35 percent compared to the previous year.
In 2023, a total of 163,533 school candidates wrote five or more subjects, with 49,373 obtaining a Grade C or better in those subjects. This resulted in a pass rate of 30.19 percent, slightly lower than the 2022 pass rate of 30.40 percent, representing a decrease of 0.21 percent.
For private candidates who wrote five or more subjects in 2023, there were 23,095, with 5,047 obtaining a Grade C or better. This translated to a pass rate of 21.85 percent, showing an increase of 4.19 percent compared to the 2022 pass rate of 17.66 percent.
Now, the government has announced that Form 5 students will start their classes on February 5, 2024. Schools opened for the current first term on 9 January. Regarding fees, lower six pupils will pay fees based on a prorated formula derived from the approved Term One fees for each school. The calculation involves multiplying the number of remaining days in Term 1 by the total approved Term 1 fees and dividing by the total number of days in Term 1.
The statement reads;
The commencement date for the 2024 lower six classes is Monday. the 5th of February 2024. Please ensure that all Heads of schools, teachers, parents and the pupils are advised of this date.
The fees payable by the lower six pupils will be on a prorata basis to the approved Term One fees for each school. given by the following formula:
The number of days remaining in Term 1 2021 multiplied by the total approved Term 1 Fees divided by the Number of days in Term 1
All schools are expected to commence Lower Six classes on the given date.
