In a sweeping move, the government has shut down 368 technical and vocational training centers across the country for operating without necessary documentation.
The closures, effective immediately, affect various institutions, including Christian academic centers, computer training schools, beauty and therapy colleges, and dressmaking schools.
The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development confirmed the action, stating that the institutions failed to comply with the Manpower Planning and Development Act.
The ministry conducted inspections in all provinces, de-registering and closing institutions operating illegally. The crackdown aims to ensure access to quality and equitable education and training.
This is not the first time the government has taken action against unregistered institutions. In February 2022, over 300 illegal schools were closed in Harare Metropolitan Province.
The full list of affected institutions has been published, and the government’s move is seen as a significant step in regulating the education sector and protecting students from substandard training.
