The government has expressed its commitment to addressing the deteriorating road conditions in Binga, a district that has experienced a significant increase in traffic volume.
This commitment was revealed by Joshua Sacco, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly.
The announcement came in response to concerns raised by Binga South legislator, Fanuel Cumanzala, regarding the prolonged delays in the rehabilitation of two crucial roads in the district.
The roads in question—the Cross Dete-Binga Road and the 15-kilometer stretch from Gwai River to Lusulu via Lubimbi Road—have not seen substantial rehabilitation efforts in years. Specifically, the Cross Dete-Binga Road has been neglected for over 15 years, while the Lubimbi Road remains untarred since the early 1980s.
Sacco outlined that the ministry plans to upgrade the road incrementally, focusing on stretches of 10 kilometers at a time. He also pointed out that the prioritization of road rehabilitation within the province is influenced by traffic volume, which dictates resource allocation.
In 2023, efforts were made to rehabilitate only a 3-kilometer section of road near the Kamativi area with the support of Kamativi Mining Company.
Additionally, the Gwai-Binga Road, which serves as an alternative route to Binga town—particularly important for accessing the Kariangwe Mission Hospital—also suffers from financial constraints that have hindered its development. Currently, only the Cross Dete-Kamativi-Binga Road has been surfaced as a result of limited resources.
As the government prepares to undertake these rehabilitation efforts, stakeholders in Binga are hopeful that the increased attention and commitment will lead to tangible improvements in road conditions, enhancing accessibility and safety for residents and visitors alike.
