The Municipality of Gwanda has issued a statement regarding an incident where firefighters resorted to unconventional methods to extinguish a fire that engulfed a Toyota Runx on November 18.
The firefighters were reportedly unable to operate the fire tender effectively, prompting them to improvise their firefighting approach.
The vehicle caught fire near the NSSA complex along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, just outside Gwanda’s town center, on Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses captured videos and photos showing firefighters using a suction hose to collect water in a dish, which they then poured onto the flames.
In their statement, the Municipality of Gwanda explained that the leading fireman initially reported issues with engaging the required gears of the fire tender. However, after a thorough investigation, it was concluded that there was no technical fault with the vehicle.

The statement read:
“On November 18, 2024, the Municipality of Gwanda received a distress call regarding a motor vehicle fire, and our fire team responded promptly. Unfortunately, the leading fireman reported difficulties in engaging the necessary gears for proper operation, resulting in the decision to improvise a firefighting strategy that is not typical for such situations and posed risks to our personnel.
“Following our investigation, we found no technical faults with the fire tender. It is imperative for the Fire Section of the Municipality to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures to ensure readiness in emergency situations.
“We prioritize the safety and well-being of our community and remain committed to transparency and accuracy in our communications. We regret this unfortunate incident and have implemented corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
“Our Fire Section is dedicated to being prepared to respond effectively when duty calls.”
The Toyota Runx was reportedly en route from Beitbridge to Gwanda when it developed a mechanical issue. The driver had engaged a mechanic to address the problem, but while repairs were underway, the vehicle unexpectedly caught fire. Despite the firefighting efforts, the vehicle was ultimately completely consumed by the flames.
