In Gweru, Zimbabwe, Marvellous Sibanda, aged 23, and Israel Mpofu, aged 40, residents of the Chief Bunina area in Lower Gweru, faced legal repercussions as they appeared before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court, charged with four counts of unlawful entry.
These two individuals targeted various homes, breaking in to steal valuables over a period spanning from July to August 2024.
On August 8, 2024, one notable incident occurred when a complainant left his property briefly to gather firewood from a nearby bush.
During his absence, the accused utilized a duplicate key to gain access to the complainant’s home, where they proceeded to pilfer household items and cash before making their escape.
Fortunately, the complainant returned in time to spot the trail left by the thieves and was able to pursue them.
He successfully apprehended Sibanda, who was attempting to flee while burdened with a 10-kilogram bag of mealie meal, along with other stolen items.
In the apprehension, the complainant also found his cellphone in Sibanda’s pocket, providing further incriminating evidence.
Following the presentation of the case in court, both men were found guilty on all four counts of unlawful entry, resulting in significant prison sentences.
Marvellous Sibanda received a 30-month sentence, though 12 months of this term were suspended for a period of five years, with an additional six months suspended contingent upon the restitution of stolen items.
This effectively means that Sibanda will serve a total of 12 months behind bars.
Conversely, Israel Mpofu received a slightly lighter sentence of 22 months, reflecting the court’s assessment of their actions.
