A notorious armed robber, Calvin Gasura, came face to face with one of his victims, Hazvinei Mutasa, in court, and the latter offered to pay school fees for the former’s kids.
Harare Magistrate court, with Fadzai Mtombeni presiding, has a trial for Gasura on Mondy. The armed robber was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison for his crimes.
Giant Petroleum owner Hazvinei Mutasa stood as a witness in the case. The businessman told the court that he was willing to help Gasura’s family while he served his sentence.
In his testimony, he shared that Gasura deserves to be behind bars. However, Mutasa vowed to help the robber’s kids who were left behind with school kids even though his kids were still traumatised.
Hazvinei Mutasa stated that his children were traumatised by the events that took place when the family was robbed. In his testimony, he shared that his kids still play where they re-enacted the events when they were denied bail.
‘One day, when I returned from work, I ran over a ball my kids had left on the drive away, and it burst. They locked all the doors, thinking that it was a gunshot sound that haunted my children. This man is a threat to society and should be locked away to reform.’
Mutasa lost 36,00000 worth of property and cash to Gasura during the robbery. The possessions consisted of a gun and other valuables. The robber also took $10,000, which was in the ceiling, and $20,000, which was in the house.
Gasura was arrested eight days after the incident, but none of the things he stole were recovered.
Events that happened on the day the crime was committed
On 10 November 2020, Mutasa was at his gate speaking with his builders when Gasura and his accomplices attacked them. The victims were ordered to lie on the ground,d and Mutasa was searched.
The robbers took his pistol, and they forced him into the yard, demanding money from him. Gasura and his friends broke down the door and fired the gun before assaulting Mutasa’s wife with a baton stick.
They took the businessman’s money and valuables and fled in his car, which was found dumped in Vhera Village in Seke.
