The Harare City Council has announced a US$4 million waste management budget, which will enable it to procure 45 refuse compactors in the next three months.
The new equipment will be used to enhance the city’s waste collection and disposal services, which have been criticised for being inadequate in recent years.
According to the council’s spokesperson, Michael Chideme, the new compactors will be used to improve the efficiency of waste collection and reduce the amount of litter on the city’s streets. “We are committed to providing a clean and healthy environment for our citizens, and this investment in new equipment is a major step towards achieving that goal,” Chideme said.
The council has identified several areas of the city that require priority attention in terms of waste management, including residential areas, business centers, and public spaces.
The new compactors will be deployed in these areas to ensure that waste is collected regularly and efficiently.
The procurement of the compactors is expected to be completed within the next three month.
In addition to the compactors, the council has also budgeted for other essential items such as garbage bins, wheelie bins, and containers to support its waste management operations.
The council’s waste management budget for 2023 is significantly higher than last year’s budget, which was US$2.5 million. The increased funding is expected to enable the council to scale up its waste management operations and provide better services to residents.
