Harare City Council councilor Blessing Duma is in hot water again, accused of shielding land barons in the capital city. Because who doesn’t love a good land scandal? This isn’t Duma’s first rodeo; last year, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission caught wind of his alleged extortion tactics.
Duma reportedly coerced the director of housing and community services, Admore Nhekairo, into signing allocation letters for two unserved residential stands in Mabelreign. The beneficiaries? Walter Chigwereva and Danai Dzawanda. Duma allegedly threatened Nhekairo with unspecified action if he didn’t comply.
A council official claims Duma is being used by a cartel of land barons to fight Nhekairo. These land barons have invaded four sites in Mabvuku and Tafara, encroaching on graves and land reserved for recreational purposes. Principal allocations officer Edgar Dzehonye is also in their crosshairs.
Harare mayor Jacob Mafume has warned councillors against nefarious activities, emphasizing their role in facilitating fairness and equity. Duma, however, seems to be doing just the opposite.
Attempts to contact Duma for comment were met with silence. Maybe he’s too busy plotting his next move or enjoying the benefits of his alleged land baron connections. One thing’s for sure – the people of Harare deserve better.
