A Harare woman sought legal protection from her ex-boyfriend, citing harassment and physical abus3 linked to a US$50 debt.
Tendai Chawadzwera accused Takudzwa Shumba of persistently visiting her home and her parents’ house, insisting that she repay money he had lent her for a hairdo while they were still in a relationship.
Chawadzwera explained her distress: “He constantly visits my house and my parents’ home, claiming that he wants his money back. He gave me the money when we were still dating, and now he wants it back. I am not going to give him the money because he used me, promising that he wanted to marry me and introduce me to his parents.”
In response, Shumba acknowledged visiting Chawadzwera but clarified that his intentions were solely to reclaim the funds.
“I have no issue with the peace order being granted, but I just want my US$50 back,” he stated. He insisted, “We dated for a year, and I gave her the money for her hair. Now that we are no longer together, she needs to pay it back.”
After hearing both sides, presiding magistrate Ms. Meenal Naratam granted the peace order, directing Shumba to refrain from visiting Chawadzwera’s residence and from publicly insulting her.
