Harare is facing a potential water crisis due to a shortage of treatment chemicals caused by the city council’s failure to pay its debt to suppliers.
The financial arrangement, which aimed to clear a $3 million debt owed to Chemplex Corporation, has stalled due to haggling between the two parties.
According to sources, the city council was supposed to make daily payments of $50,000 to Chemplex Corporation as part of the restructuring plan.
However, the council has been reluctant to operationalise the payment plan, leaving the company in a precarious financial position.
The Harare City Council’s finance director, Godfrey Kusangaya, and spokesperson, Stanley Gama, did not respond to requests for comment.
Mayor Jacob Mafume was also unavailable for comment.
The city has been plagued by frequent water shortages due to financial, operational, and management crises at the local authority.
The recent appointment of a commission of inquiry by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to probe the council’s operations and financial management has put the spotlight on the council’s inefficiencies.
