Residents of the Amsterdam community in Harare are facing a serious water crisis. With no access to clean water, they are forced to drink from wells that have been dug in cemeteries.
This situation is dangerous, as there have been reports of burial clothes and debris from graves found in these wells.
The problem stems from years of neglect and lack of investment in public water infrastructure.
According to reports, Harare’s water system, built in the 1950s for just 300,000 people, is now trying to serve over 4.5 million residents, many of whom don’t have safe drinking water.
The city council has not provided any alternatives, leaving households to rely on contaminated sources, which pose health risks due to bacteria and pathogens.

Despite knowing the water is unsafe, residents have no other choices.
One local resident stated, “We are fully aware that the water we are drinking is unsafe, but we don’t have any other options.” Efforts from NGOs to provide clean water through boreholes and purification tablets have not been enough, leaving around 5,000 families without proper access to water.
Residents are urgently calling on the government and local authorities to address this crisis.
“We need help. We cannot keep living like this, drinking from contaminated wells,” one resident said. A former councilor has criticized the current leadership for not taking action, emphasizing the need for immediate solutions.
