A 37-year-old resident of Harare, Crynoce Mwanamutsvene, found himself in court yesterday, accused of r@ping his landlord’s 12-year-old granddaughter.
Mwanamutsvene appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei, who decided to remand him in custody until January 24.
According to the details presented by Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, the incident occurred while the young girl was sleeping with her two aunts in the dining room, with Mwanamutsvene residing in the same house.
After arriving home, Mwanamutsvene went to his room and, after a brief period, proceeded to take a bath. It was during this time that he entered the dining room and allegedly assaulted the girl.
One of the aunts, awakening to their tenant raping the granddaughter, witnessed the assault. Swiftly, she alerted the grandmother who was asleep in the bedroom.
Chirenje further detailed that Mwanamutsvene feigned intoxication by lying on the floor when confronted. Despite attempts to rouse him, he remained unresponsive. The girl’s grandfather assisted in moving him back to his room. Subsequently, the family reported the incident to the police, resulting in Mwanamutsvene’s apprehension.
During the court appearance, Magistrate Donald Ndirowei decided to remand Mwanamutsvene in custody until January 24. He is set for his next hearing on that said date. The legal process is expected to unfold as the case progresses.
The alleged assault has sparked outrage within the community, highlighting the need for increased awareness and action against such heinous acts. Support for the victim and her family is pouring in as local authorities handle the legal aspects of the case.
