Harare model Tumelo Nare has been sentenced to 15 months after being found guilty of cocaine possession. The incident, which took place at a city hotel, left many in shock and disbelief.
It all began when Tumelo Nare, accompanied by her accomplice Precious Bango, checked into the hotel in early February. However, things quickly took a strange turn on the evening of February 5th when the two individuals started behaving erratically, running naked through the hotel corridors.
Concerned delegates who were holding a meeting at the hotel immediately alerted the authorities and the police swiftly responded. Upon searching Tumelo Nare and Bango’s hotel room, a stash of cocaine was discovered, leading to their immediate arrest.
The Trial and Conviction
The case was brought before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo, who oversaw the full trial and subsequently convicted Nare and Bango. The prosecution, represented by Nomsa Kangara, successfully proved that the pair had no viable defense, as they were caught on CCTV footage running around the hotel naked. This evidence, coupled with the discovery of cocaine in their room, sealed their fate.
During the trial, it was revealed that the confiscated substance was identified as 0.2g of cocaine with a street value of $16,000 at the time. This revelation only added weight to the charges against Nare and Bango.
The Defense’s Claims and Verdict
Despite the overwhelming evidence against them, Nare and Bango tried to present a defense in court, H-Metro reveals. They claimed that it was Pamhidzai who was responsible for the cocaine, implying that they were merely innocent bystanders caught up in his actions.
Nare, citing her epilepsy condition, stated that she suffered a seizure on that fateful evening, resulting in a nosebleed. Bango, in a state of panic, ran through the hotel corridors seeking assistance while Pamhidzai managed to escape, leaving behind his belongings.
However, their defense fell short, as the court found their explanations implausible and unsupported by the evidence. Magistrate Ruth Moyo delivered a guilty verdict and sentenced Nare to 15 months of imprisonment for cocaine possession.
