The Harare City Council has announced plans to relocate 78 families from Budiriro West suburb who were severely affected by catastrophic flooding last year, directing them to a safer area in Mabvuku-Tafara.
These families endured devastating losses when torrential rains during the festive season inundated their homes, which were unfortunately situated on a wetland adjacent to the Marimba River.
The relentless downpours not only wreaked havoc in Budiriro, but also impacted other high-density suburbs and low-lying areas across the country, leading to extensive property damage and displacement.
As the floods engulfed the community, residents desperately sought refuge from the rising waters, many of whom saw their belongings swept away.
Tragically, the chaos resulted in the heartbreaking loss of a six-year-old child, a grim reminder of nature’s fury during such extreme weather events.
In light of this calamity, the city council aims to provide these affected families with a new beginning in Mabvuku-Tafara, hoping the relocation will offer them a more stable living environment away from the flood-prone areas.
This initiative underscores the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and infrastructure improvements in vulnerable communities. As the council seeks to implement this relocation, ongoing support and resources will be essential for the affected families to rebuild their lives.
