The Mutare Regional Magistrates Court has sentenced a self-proclaimed prophet to 18 years imprisonment for raping his neighbor under the guise of a “healing ritual.” The 44-year-old man, who was a spiritual healer, raped the 46-year-old victim in the Dangamvura high suburb of Mutare on April 16 last year.
The complainant had sought the prophet’s help for severe menstrual bleeding, and after some initial herbal treatment, the prophet claimed that evil spirits were tormenting her. He then took her to a river near the Gimboki military barracks, where he raped her. Believing it was part of the healing process, the victim complied.
However, her husband later discovered the assault and reported the matter to the police, leading to the prophet’s arrest. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) highlighted that the case exposes how predators exploit faith and desperation to commit abuse.
The NPAZ also raises important questions about accountability for fake healers and the protection of vulnerable individuals. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of exploiting faith and trust for nefarious purposes.
