Zimbos online are heartbroken after a medical doctor died following a road accident while coming from saving lives.
Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono reported that Dr Nembaware had gone to a rural hospital in Hauna, Manicaland, where he provided essential health care to the local community.
On Friday, September 22, 2023, he was on his way to Mutare, the provincial capital, when tragedy struck. The car he was travelling in burst its tyre and crashed, leaving him with severe traumatic brain injury.
He was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital, where he was stabilised but needed urgent specialised care. However, the hospital did not have a working intensive care unit. He had to be ferried to Harare by air ambulance, but there was no helicopter ambulance to rush him in time.
Desperate, his family scurried around and raised US$5,000 to hire a private air ambulance service, but they faced another weakening huddle. The Mutare airport did not have working landing lights, which prevented the plane from taking off at night.
Dr Nembaware died from the injuries at around 11 p.m. on Friday night. He leaves behind his wife, two children and a gutted family. His colleagues and friends expressed their shock and rage at the circumstances of his death, which they blamed on Zimbabwe’s health system’s collapse.
Zimbabwe’s health system has been deteriorating for years due to economic crisis, political instability, corruption and mismanagement.
