DYNAMOS failed to take advantage of their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title rivals’ blundering after being held to a draw by Hwange at Barbourfields (BF) Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday. After log leaders Highlanders played a goalless draw against ZPC Kariba on Saturday, the stage was set for DeMbare to eat into Bosso’s advantage, yet they squandered the chance.
They, however, maintained their unbeaten record at BF. DeMbare were saved from the jaws of defeat by goalkeeper Prince Tafiremutsa who made an incredible save in the 53rd minute from a shot by Hwange skipper Kelly Shiyandindi from close range.
Dynamos remain on position four on the log table with 29 points, still nine behind leaders Highlanders. Dynamos coach Herbert Maruwa paid tribute Hwange for their discipline and resilience.
“It was a tough match. They had their game plan, sat back and tried to hit us on the counter-attack and it worked for them. We got our chances, they got theirs. A draw was a fair result. We got our chances, we could have won this game, but we have to make sure we push the boys to finish off the game when they get the chances,” Maruwa said.
Hwange head coach Nation Dube was pleased with a point gained away from home.
“A point away from home is a gain because we are coming from a defeat and we were a playing a big club that is flying coming from a 5-1 victory over Yadah,” Dube said.
The first half was lifeless with a few wasted opportunities by Dynamos who could have been one or two goals ahead had they been clinical. Jayden Bakare had the best of the chances on the half hour mark, but watched his effort go way over the cross bar from inside the penalty area after being set up by Elton Chikona.
Chikona, sent through by Tanaka Shandirwa, also blasted a whistling shot from inside the box four minutes before the break, narrowly missing the target. The second half started off at a fast pace, but also degenerated into a dull affair with Bakare culpable again on 46 minutes after missing a sitter with Hwange goalkeeper Wellington Muuya on the ground.
In the dying minutes of the game Dynamos piled pressure on the coalminers, but would not get that elusive goal with Finland-bound Chikona shooting off target four minutes before the final whistle.
