The N3 highway connecting Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa has been closed from both directions by authorities following an acid spill caused by a chemical truck.
The incident occured near Westville, a suburb in Durban at the spaghetti junction and authorities suspect its hydrochloric acid.
Motorists and residents have been advised to use alternative routes which has significantly caused traffic congestions around the area and nearby malls have reportedly closed as the area was marked a current danger zone by authorities.
KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson, Sindi Msimang said the truck was carrying a mixed load that included hydrochloric acid but was not involved in a collision.
Msimang urged motorists caught in traffic close to the scene to refrain from smoking and to keep their windows closed.
