In a resolute response to recent accusations, opposition stalwart Tendai Biti has vehemently denied any involvement in the recalls of opposition MPs and councillors orchestrated by Sengezo Tshabangu. Biti, a key figure in the Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC), dismissed the claims, stating, “I would never betray the struggle for democracy.”
The political landscape in Zimbabwe is tumultuous, with the aftermath of a contested election, pervasive corruption, and the looting of public assets.
The international stage’s focus on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East has allowed the Zimbabwean regime to perpetrate election fraud and further destabilize the opposition through recalls. Biti asserts, “It is shocking to hear defamatory claims that I am colluding with the regime.”
Expressing his disdain for the recalls orchestrated by Tshabangu, Biti firmly states, “I don’t believe in recalls. I have never been part of recalls. I will never be part of recalls.” Drawing on personal experience, he shares the pain of recalls in 2015 and 2021, emphasizing that the recalls are unconstitutional and cause immense suffering for families and constituents.
Biti, who has endured imprisonment and torture for the cause, pledges unwavering allegiance to the democratic struggle in Zimbabwe. He makes it clear that he has never worked for Zanu PF and adamantly declares, “I will die before I lend my hand to the illegitimate Zanu PF regime.”
Despite facing challenges and reservations about the political process that prevented him from becoming a Member of Parliament, Biti has retreated to his law practice and international engagements. He acknowledges his aspirations but remains committed to fighting for Zimbabweans in the legal sphere and through progressive international efforts.
Amidst the controversy, Biti sees the recalls and accusations as distractions engineered by the illegitimate regime. He urges fellow Zimbabweans not to be swayed by the orchestrated drama, emphasizing that the main objective is to free the country from the dictatorship. Biti remains committed to fighting for Zimbabweans through his law practice and international engagements.
As Zimbabwe grapples with political turmoil, Tendai Biti stands firm in refuting allegations of involvement in opposition recalls. The nation watches closely as the CCC faces internal strife, raising questions about the true nature of Biti’s role in the party’s future.
