The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has threatened jail terms for people who light fireworks and fire crackers without permission from the police.
The ZRP reminded those planning to light fireworks on New Year’s Eve that they need permission from the police or local authorities. Failing to do so and neglecting to inform neighbors could lead to arrest and prosecution for creating a public nuisance. The consequences include a Level 5 fine or a six-month jail term.
According to the law, individuals must seek permission from local authorities before setting off fireworks in urban areas. Failure to obtain permission can result in charges under Section 46 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act for creating a public nuisance. The Third Schedule of the Act specifies public nuisances, including making a fire or letting off fireworks in a public place without the appropriate authority’s permission.
Firecrackers, wrapped in heavy paper casing containing explosive compounds, are popular for celebrations. However, those handling them must be knowledgeable, sober, and supervised closely when children are involved.
“We would want to reiterate that anyone who wants to use fireworks must notify the police in advance and get the necessary clearance. They should also notify their neighbours well in advance. These are dangerous and may lead to serious harm. In recent years, we have dealt with cases in which minors have been seriously injured; and we are trying to avoid this.”
Nyathi warned that individuals violating the law risk arrest and prosecution, emphasising the need for responsible use of fireworks. Police will be on high alert to prevent illegal activities during the celebrations.

Aside from the threat to people and property, fireworks can cause distress to animals, prompting them to flee into the streets. This poses risks to the public, leading to potential injuries from bites and accidents.
The noise and unpredictability of fireworks can trigger anxiety and fear in animals, particularly dogs. This often results in restlessness, panting, pacing, and whining.
Notably, the use of fireworks has led to health and safety issues, with reports of individuals facing dangers caused by firecrackers. Some children have even lost their eyes due to accidents involving fireworks.
