Cameroon’s government is facing increasing scrutiny over the health and whereabouts of 91-year-old President Paul Biya, who has not been seen in public since his official visit to China over a month ago.
Contrary to rampant speculation on social media and mainstream reports, Senior Civil Cabinet Director Samuel Mvondo Ayolo reassured citizens that Biya is in excellent health and is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, where he has been engaged in meetings to further the development of Cameroon.
Despite these claims, many citizens remain skeptical, with individuals like Gloria Wirkom, a businessperson in Yaoundé, expressing a deep-seated desire for tangible proof of the president’s well-being.
Wirkom articulated the public’s right to be informed about the leader’s health status, emphasizing that trust in official communications has eroded considerably.
Government spokesperson Rene Emmanuel Sadi dismissed rumors of Biya’s death as “pure imagination,” asserting that the president is aware of the issues facing Cameroonians.
However, concerns persist about the lack of transparency from the government, with merchants like Akongnwi Neba calling for verifiable updates on Biya’s condition.
The situation has heightened tension among citizens, as they seek clarity on the state of their long-serving leader, who has ruled for over four decades and remains the oldest head of state globally.
While Biya’s supporters are rallying for his continued candidacy in the upcoming 2025 elections, his silence raises more questions than answers about his intentions.
The government has yet to confirm whether Biya will make a public appearance in Geneva, leaving many wondering about the future direction of Cameroon under his leadership.
